Appellation: none
Cuvée: Brutal
Colour: White
Grapes: Albariño
About: The name Brutal of course is used by anyone who associates with the original idea of producers Escoda and Mendall that such a wine should be on the edge of deviance but a great pleasure to those who like to be on the edge albeit the use has been over-done. In this version though the label depicts a witch who is rectifying the wine! In this case the residual sugar took forever to work off so the wine was touch and go for a long time and is bottled after 18 months in amphora after fermenting and ageing in chestnut first.

Location: from Cambados right in front of the sea, the plot used for Volandeira (with seashells on the label)
Size: < 1 ha
Age: planted in 1980s and 90’s
Soils: granite
Exposition: basically flat
Altitude: 5m
Training: all the vines are planted on pergola trellising lifting it off the floor to avoid damp and to increase ventilation.
Farming philosophy: basically organic, with natural treatments, as little as possible conventional organic (sulfur, copper).
Average yield hl/ha: 45
Climate: humid, Atlantic, but benefitting from sea breezes, cool but increasingly warm in winter and hot in summer.

The harvest is carried out into small buckets of 10 to 15 litres and then transported within 30 minutes to an hour to the cellar, there’s no analysis of the grapes just tasting and looking at the juice. Whole bunches are crushed and pressed direct to ferment in chestnut barrels, over 20 years old, where the wine remained after fermentation until being moved to the Porco Bravo amphora to finish its sugars the summer after the harvest. There is nothing added or taken, no sulfites at any stage. The malo happens naturally. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered usually in a small window of opportunity in the summer when the wine has fallen clear.

Vintage Notes 2020
Another complicated vintage where the winter was wet but not cold. Budding took place very early but was accompanied by warm and wet weather causing heavy mildew attacks. The summer was hot and dry until 10 days of rain in August followed by an early harvest.
Date bottled: 2022-07
Bottles produced: 500
Alcohol %: 13
SO2 Total: < 20
Tasting: crazy complex aromas, red and yellow fruits, spice, herb, vegetal, high energy, high acid, medium body, yet a bit Brutal but also excellent and richly rewarding.
