Grapes: Macabeu 80, Xarello 20
About: new in 2019 from fruit that used to be sold in bulk to Juve y Camps, a quality local producer of Cava. Light in alcohol with a gram of sulfur at bottling to keep it straight, this is like a white version of Roig Boig, simpler than L’Ermot. Easy and fun.
Location of vines: Macabeu from two vineyards in Subirats, the Sota l’hort (under the orchard) vineyard and Jepet. Xarello from a vineyard called Vicenta in El Pla del Penedès.
Size ha: In Subirats just over 2 ha, in El Pla 1.2 ha.
Age: Sota l’hort planted in 2011, Jepet in 1995, Vicenta in 2001.
Training: on wire in cordon de royat.
Farming: organic, with the emphasis to protect soil moisture and microbial activity.
Average yield hl/ha: 45.
The Xarello was pressed direct to concrete tank, half the Macabeu was de-stemmed, not crushed and macerated on skins for 7 days. Racked and returned to tank. The malo happens naturally. Temperature was controlled to 22º. The tanks were blended together a month before bottling without fining or filtration.
Vintage Notes 2019
A wet winter and spring provided reserves of water to survive and thrive during a hot, dry summer. The wines are both very ripe and juicy.
